Songkran Festival is an exhilarating celebration of the Thai New Year, marked by water battles in the streets. Celebrate Thai New Year or Songkran in Chiang Mai, Thailand was one of the best places to experience this event, which takes place annually between the 13th and 15th of April. In 2019, I was fortunate to witness the start of the festivities in Chiang Mai and it was truly unforgettable.
Clothing Tips
It is essential to wear appropriate clothing during Songkran. I recommend avoiding jeans or any heavy material that will become uncomfortable when wet. Instead, wear swimwear or other lightweight clothing that will allow you to move freely. Footwear should be comfortable and suitable for the activities you plan to participate in.
Accessories to Celebrate Songkran 2019 in Chiang Mai, Thailand
Protective eyewear is a must-have for Songkran. High-powered water guns are commonly used during the festival, and it is important to keep your eyes safe from the powerful jets of water. Additionally, invest in a water-resistant case to keep your valuables such as your phone and money dry. Water guns are also essential, and you can choose from a wide variety of options at different price points.
Locations to Celebrate Songkran 2019 in Chiang Mai, Thailand
The old city near Tha Pae Gate is the hub of the Songkran celebrations in Chiang Mai. This is where the main water battles take place. I recommend visiting in the afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day, and stopping a few blocks before the gate to avoid the heavy traffic caused by festival activities. At Tha Pae Gate, you can choose to stay near the music and watch trucks and motorbikes drive by while getting soaked, or join the water fights by shooting water at the passing vehicles. Alternatively, you can attend traditional rituals and ceremonies at temples in the early morning.
Other activities during Songkran include day and night concerts at shopping malls such as the MAYA Lifestyle Shopping Center and CentralFestival Chiang Mai. The Tha Pae Gate market is also worth a visit, where you can find an abundance of street food vendors selling local delicacies.
Etiquette
It is important to practice good etiquette during Songkran. Do not aim water guns at people’s faces, and avoid jumping in front of vehicles to shoot at the drivers. Additionally, refrain from getting angry at those who douse you with water – this is a playful and enjoyable festival for all involved.
Experience the joy and excitement of Songkran in Chiang Mai, Thailand. With proper preparation and good etiquette, this event is a truly unforgettable celebration of the Thai New Year.
