Sao Inthakhin Chiang Mai City Pillar is located at 103 Prapokkloa Rd, Tambon Si Phum, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50200. This revered pillar, an emblem of the city’s inception, traces its roots to April 12, 1296 CE. King Mangrai, the city’s founder, erected the initial pillar at Wat Sadue Mueang, also known as Wat Inthakhin, located on Inthawarorot road. However, the annals of time saw it transplanted to its current abode – a shrine within the temple grounds of Wat Chedi Luang – orchestrated by Lanna king Kawila in 1800 CE. This relocation symbolizes the city’s enduring history and the profound reverence it holds for its origins.
Wat Chedi Luang: Where Faith and Architecture Converge
Adjacent to the City Pillar, you’ll encounter Wat Chedi Luang, sharing the same address at 103 Prapokkloa Rd. This Buddhist temple, nestled in Chiang Mai’s historic center, bears witness to the city’s spiritual and architectural legacy. The temple’s genesis can be traced back to the 14th century when King Saen Muang Ma envisioned it as the final resting place for his father’s ashes. However, the construction, spanning a decade, was left unfinished. Following the king’s demise, his widow undertook the task of completing the temple.
Challenges and stability concerns prolonged its construction, culminating in the mid-15th century during the reign of King Tilokaraj. At its zenith, Wat Chedi Luang soared to a height of 82 meters with a base diameter of 54 meters, earning the title of the largest building in all of Lanna. In 1468, the revered Emerald Buddha found its abode within the temple’s eastern niche. Tragedy struck in 1545 when an earthquake caused the upper 30 meters of the structure to collapse, and in 1551, the Emerald Buddha was relocated to Luang Prabang.
