Honda Scoopy i Liverpool Limited Edition

If you’re planning to explore Chiang Mai, renting a scooter is an excellent way to get around. It’s affordable, convenient, and you get to see more of the city on your own terms. Here’s what you need to know about How to Rent a Scooter in Chiang Mai: A Beginner’s Guide.

Where to Rent a Scooter in Chiang Mai

Carvillages Thailand is a popular place to rent scooters. It’s located in Si Phum Sub-district, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50200. You’ll need to provide your passport, phone number, and a deposit. You can choose to leave either your passport or money as a deposit. I think I left 3000 Baht (74 GBP or 88 EUR on 23 February 2020). Note that they didn’t ask for a driving license or if you know how to drive a scooter.

Scooter Options and Prices

You might be offered options to choose from, and you can always ask for a specific model. Yamaha GT 125 and Honda Click are common models available for rent. Based on my experience, you can rent a scooter for 160 Baht or 180 Baht per day (4 – 4.5 GBP or 4.5 – 5 EUR on 23 March 2020). Prices will depend on the model, your negotiation skills, and rental duration. It’s a good idea to visit a few rental shops to compare prices and get the best offer.

Rules and Safety

Once you get your scooter, there are a few rules to follow. Don’t drive to Doi Suthep, a popular tourist destination, because it’s a steep uphill climb that most 125cc scooters struggle with. Return the bike on time and with a full tank. Gas stations are everywhere, and you can fill up for around 100 Baht (2.50 GBP or 3 EUR).

Taking Pictures of the Bike

It’s always better to be safe than sorry. Take pictures of the rented scooter and helmet to have proof of any pre-existing damage. This way, you can avoid paying for damages that you didn’t cause.
